Ecommerce operations guide

Entering the US market? Make the first order ready before the first shipment.

To launch US ecommerce fulfillment, assign import responsibilities, prepare the catalog and receiving plan, and test the first order before releasing stock. European brands should plan the border and warehouse handoffs separately: a warehouse agreement does not automatically settle importer-of-record responsibilities. FHU operates in the US and Oroszlány, Hungary; confirm the product, facility and launch scope before dispatching inventory.

Decision support

What does a US-entry fulfillment plan need?

Use the same definitions and evidence across every option. A comparison is not reliable when one path uses best-case assumptions and another uses observed operating data.

Execution

How do European brands prepare inventory for a US launch?

Move to the next step only when the evidence and owner for the current step are clear.

  1. 01

    Start with a responsibility map

Keep importing, taxes, product rules and fulfillment responsibilities explicit. Selecting a US warehouse does not by itself settle importer-of-record or regulatory obligations. Use qualified advisers for the decisions they own.

  2. 02

Check the import model before the first shipment

CBP’s August 2025 de minimis change makes an old low-value-parcel assumption an unsafe launch budget. Ask your adviser to confirm the current entry method and costs for the goods and transaction, separately from warehouse receiving and fulfillment charges.

  3. 03

    Build the catalog before shipping

Provide identifiers, dimensions, weights, variants, packaging and any lot, expiration or special-handling needs. Ask the receiving facility to confirm what it can accept before dispatching the shipment.

  4. 04

Agree what a received unit means

Separate arrived, counted, quarantined and sellable inventory. Record who approves variances and what must be resolved before the storefront can offer stock to customers.

  5. 05

    Test the first customer journey

Connect the agreed sales channels, place representative orders and verify address data, allocation, shipment confirmation and cancellations. Confirm returns instructions and customer-support escalation.

  6. 06

    Launch against actual readiness

Use the existing receiving-to-first-order checklist for the detailed acceptance test. Begin with the inventory and channels that have passed; assign remaining exceptions without promising unsupported availability.

Planning questions

What should brands resolve before entering the US?

Separate border responsibilities, warehouse readiness and customer promises before the first order.

  1. 01

Does a fulfillment warehouse automatically become the importer of record?

Do not assume it does. Name the importer of record and confirm the arrangement with a qualified customs adviser before shipping. Keep the brand, broker, transport and warehouse responsibilities explicit in the launch plan.

  2. 02

Can I plan around the former $800 de minimis assumption?

Do not reuse it without checking current rules. CBP announced the suspension of duty-free de minimis treatment effective August 29, 2025. Confirm the applicable entry process, exceptions, duties and fees with your customs adviser; this guide does not determine them for your goods.

  3. 03

When should inventory become available to US customers?

Release it after the agreed receipt checks, discrepancy resolution and order tests. A delivery appointment or arrival scan alone does not confirm that quantities, product identifiers and channel availability are ready for customer orders.

  4. 04

Does US inventory guarantee two-day delivery everywhere?

No. Delivery depends on the origin, customer destination, available stock, selected carrier service and cutoff. Test the intended service promise against the actual launch plan before advertising it.

Boundaries

Before you start

  • Import requirements depend on the goods and transaction; a fulfillment agreement is not customs or tax advice.
  • Product acceptance, storage, customization and receiving arrangements need confirmation for the selected facility.
  • Delivery speed depends on stock placement, destination, carrier service and cutoff; US storage alone does not guarantee two-day nationwide delivery.
